10 Common Plants that Contain Deadly Poison

Nature never fails to amaze us. From the perennial beauty to the soothing effect that it has on us, there is immense magic that Nature weaves. But many a time, its calmness hides beneath what could be dangerous and fatal for us. So, it’s time for Nature Lovers to shift their focus from admiring the willows and brooks to some poisonous plants that are unforgivingly deadly. Know them:

1. Cerbera odollam or ‘Suicide Tree’

The kernel of this plant holds the death toxin named cerberin which is extremely bitter in taste that could lead to instant death. Cerberin is a cardiotoxin which blocks some ion channels of the heart, stopping the heartbeat.

2. Jimson Weed (Datura stramonium)

Any part of this plant could kill you. The consequences could be fatal with initial symptoms of delirium, pupil dilation, amnesia, lowering of heartbeat. High dosage can cause instant death.

3. Deadly Nightshade (Atropa Belladonna)

This plant is recognized by various names like Devil’s Berries, Belladonna, Death Cherries. With symptoms like urinary retention, slurred speech, headache, delirium, confusion, the person would eventually die due to disruption of involuntary actions like breathing, heart rate etc.

4. Rhubarb

The stems of this plant are eaten in dessert as Rhubard Pie while the leaves are extremely poisonous causing internal bleeding, convulsions, coma and death.

5. Dumb Cane (Dieffenbachia)

Although, it is an extremely common house plant but it might be hard to believe to know , they are counted as one of the most poisonous plants in the world because intense pain in the mouth and throat, severe throat swelling that could cause strangulation.

6. Gloriosa superb (Kalihari)

Each part of this plant contains toxin named colchicines. If consumed, the person can suffer from low blood pressure, diarrhoea, respiratory issues, coma and ultimately, death. This plant can also cause slow poisoning that causes balding and continuous vaginal bleeding in women.

7. English Yew (Taxus Baccata)
This plant is found in the forest of Europe. The plant in entirety is poisonous except the berries. This was earlier quite used for abortions but actually, proved fatal for both the mother and the child.

8. Oleander (Nerium Oleander)

This one is the most commonly grown garden plant because of its attractive flowers. Touching this plant or tasting its leaves or stems can let the poison cause vomiting, diarrhoea, irregular heart rate, tremors, coma and death.

9. Manchineel (Hippomane Mancinella)

Often found in Florida, the Bahamas and Central America, the fruit of this plant resembles a little apple, that are often termed as the ‘death apples’.  The tree in its entirety is toxic and even touching the leaves and bark could be injurious leading to a disturbing death.

10. Ricinus communis

The castor beans of this plant, popularly known as castor plant contain toxins known as ricin and RCA that can cause symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain. Even a single seed is enough to kill a person.
